Denying the scriptural FACT that believers who die are sleeping in Jesus till judgment day, OSAS teacher David J. Smith posts at his website:

Acts 7:54-59 concerning the murder of Stephen…

Act 7:54  When they heard these things, they were cut to the heart, and they gnashed on him with their teeth.
Act 7:55  But he, being full of the Holy Ghost, looked up stedfastly into heaven, and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing on the right hand of God,
Act 7:56  And said, Behold, I see the heavens opened, and the Son of man standing on the right hand of God.
Act 7:57  Then they cried out with a loud voice, and stopped their ears, and ran upon him with one accord,
Act 7:58  And cast him out of the city, and stoned him: and the witnesses laid down their clothes at a young man’s feet, whose name was Saul.
Act 7:59  And they stoned Stephen, calling upon God, and saying, Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.

Smith posts unnecessary verses, yet OMITS the key verse – v60!!

Act 7:60  And he kneeled down, and cried with a loud voice, Lord, lay not this sin to their charge. And when he had said this, he fell asleep.

Elsewhere, Smith reveals his mindset to make statements not backed up by scripture in this statement:

“In Luke 15:10 we read, “Likewise, I say unto you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner that repenteth.” The Bible doesn’t say that the angels rejoice, although I’m certain they do. It says that there’s rejoicing “in the presence of the angels.” I believe this refers to Christians already in Heaven, i.e., the family in Heaven.” [emphasis mine]

It’s more evident in that verse that it’s ANGELS rejoicing in heaven now, rather than “Christians already in Heaven”. But what about the scores of other verses Smith ignores?

Smith: “Moses had been dead (Deuteronomy 34:5) for fifteen centuries; yet, despite being dead, he is able to speak to Jesus. Clearly, Moses’ soul was not asleep in the grave. The same is true of Elijah, who centuries earlier had been caught up in a whirlwind (2nd Kings 2:11). Elijah was still conscious.”

So we must assume that Moses and Elijah had to be conscious in heaven for centuries, or they couldn’t have appeared in a vision for a few moments? Is our God is that limited?  Must we deny Christ’s power to wake them up from sleep any time he pleased, (as he did a little girl and Lazarus, Mary and Martha’s brother) in order to teach his disciples a lesson?

Deu_31:16  And the LORD said unto Moses, Behold, thou shalt sleep with thy fathers

God told Moses he would sleep with his fathers, but Smith denies he did.

Are we to also believe that Lazarus [Mary and Martha’s brother] was conscious during those four days he was dead, and that he went to heaven during that time? If so, is it unreasonable to question why the gospel writers recorded absolutely NOTHING in scripture from Lazarus about his 4 day visit there, and what heaven was like? Was no one even interested?

Shall we also ignore the fact that JESUS HIMSELF said Lazarus was SLEEPING [meaning dead]?

Joh 11:11  These things said he: and after that he saith unto them, Our friend Lazarus sleepeth; but I go, that I may awake him out of sleep.
12  Then said his disciples, Lord, if he sleep, he shall do well.
13  Howbeit Jesus spake of his death: but they thought that he had spoken of taking of rest in sleep.
14  Then said Jesus unto them plainly, Lazarus is dead.

Both good and evil kings died and slept with their fathers in the grave, and we have no less than 39 verses to confirm that fact.

Act_13:36  For David, after he had served his own generation by the will of God, fell on sleep, and was laid unto his fathers, and saw corruption:

1Ki_2:10  So David slept with his fathers, and was buried in the city of David.
1Ki_11:21  And when Hadad heard in Egypt that David slept with his fathers…
1Ki_11:43  And Solomon slept with his fathers, and was buried in the city of David his father: and Rehoboam his son reigned in his stead.

1Ki_16:6  So Baasha slept with his fathers, and was buried in Tirzah: and Elah his son reigned in his stead.
1Ki_16:28  So Omri slept with his fathers, and was buried in Samaria: and Ahab his son reigned in his stead.

2Ki_8:24  And Joram slept with his fathers, and was buried with his fathers in the city of David: and Ahaziah his son reigned in his stead.
2Ki_10:35  And Jehu slept with his fathers: and they buried him in Samaria. And Jehoahaz his son reigned in his stead.
2Ki_13:9  And Jehoahaz slept with his fathers; and they buried him in Samaria: and Joash his son reigned in his stead. 2Ki_13:13  And Joash slept with his fathers; and Jeroboam sat upon his throne: and Joash was buried in Samaria with the kings of Israel.

2Ki_14:16  And Jehoash slept with his fathers, and was buried in Samaria with the kings of Israel; and Jeroboam his son reigned in his stead.
2Ki_14:22  He built Elath, and restored it to Judah, after that the king slept with his fathers.
2Ki_14:29  And Jeroboam slept with his fathers, even with the kings of Israel; and Zachariah his son reigned in his stead.
2Ki_15:7  So Azariah slept with his fathers; and they buried him with his fathers in the city of David: and Jotham his son reigned in his stead.

2Ki_15:22  And Menahem slept with his fathers; and Pekahiah his son reigned in his stead.
2Ki_15:38  And Jotham slept with his fathers, and was buried with his fathers in the city of David his father: and Ahaz his son reigned in his stead.
2Ki_16:20  And Ahaz slept with his fathers, and was buried with his fathers in the city of David: and Hezekiah his son reigned in his stead.
2Ki_20:21  And Hezekiah slept with his fathers: and Manasseh his son reigned in his stead.
2Ki_21:18  And Manasseh slept with his fathers, and was buried in the garden of his own house, in the garden of Uzza: and Amon his son reigned in his stead.
2Ki_24:6  So Jehoiakim slept with his fathers: and Jehoiachin his son reigned in his stead.
2Ch_9:31  And Solomon slept with his fathers, and he was buried in the city of David his father: and Rehoboam his son reigned in his stead.
2Ch_12:16  And Rehoboam slept with his fathers, and was buried in the city of David: and Abijah his son reigned in his stead.
2Ch_14:1  So Abijah slept with his fathers, and they buried him in the city of David: and Asa his son reigned in his stead.
2Ch_16:13  And Asa slept with his fathers, and died in the one and fortieth year of his reign.
2Ch_21:1  Now Jehoshaphat slept with his fathers, and was buried with his fathers in the city of David. And Jehoram his son reigned in his stead.

2Ch_26:2  He built Eloth, and restored it to Judah, after that the king slept with his fathers.
2Ch_26:23  So Uzziah slept with his fathers, and they buried him with his fathers in the field of the burial which belonged to the kings;
2Ch_27:9  And Jotham slept with his fathers, and they buried him in the city of David: and Ahaz his son reigned in his stead. 2Ch_28:27  And Ahaz slept with his fathers, and they buried him in the city, even in Jerusalem: but they brought him not into the sepulchres of the kings of Israel: and Hezekiah his son reigned in his stead.
2Ch_32:33  And Hezekiah slept with his fathers, and they buried him in the chiefest of the sepulchres of the sons of David: and all Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem did him honour at his death. And Manasseh his son reigned in his stead.
2Ch_33:20  So Manasseh slept with his fathers, and they buried him in his own house: and Amon his son reigned in his stead. Deu_31:16  And the LORD said unto Moses, Behold, thou shalt sleep with thy fathers
2Sa_7:12  And when thy days be fulfilled, and thou shalt sleep with thy fathers

Dan_12:2  And many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt.

Not all believers will die and sleep in the grave before Christ’s second coming:

1Co_15:51  Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed [into immortal beings at the last trump, on the last day.]

1Th_4:14  For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him [back to heaven, just as when Jesus rose to go there. They won’t come here from heaven, as most are erroneously taught, because they sleep in the grave now, waiting to hear Christ’s voice at the last trump, at which time they will be made immortal as they rise to go to heaven.]

Dan_12:2  And many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt.

Joh 5:28  Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice,
29  And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation.

Most pastors take a few verses out of context, completely ignoring all the above verses, falsely teaching that Christians go directly to heaven upon death, by-passing judgment day. They say only the lost will be judged after death.

The following passage is often sited as evidence that Christians don’t go to sleep in the grave:

2Co 5:1  For we know that if our earthly house of this tabernacle were dissolved [that is, if we die], we have a building of God, an house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. [immortal body]
2Co 5:2  For in this we groan, earnestly desiring to be clothed upon with our house which is from heaven [an immortal body]:

2Co 5:3  If so be that being clothed we shall not be found naked.
2Co 5:4  For we that are in this tabernacle [body] do groan, being burdened: not for that we would be unclothed, but clothed upon, that mortality might be swallowed up of life. [We’ll compare this verse with 1Cor 15:51-54 below]
2Co 5:5  Now he that hath wrought us for the selfsame thing is God, who also hath given unto us the earnest of the Spirit.

2Co 5:6  Therefore we are always confident, knowing that, while we are at home in the body, we are absent from the Lord:
2Co 5:7  (For we walk by faith, not by sight🙂

2Co 5:8  We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord.
2Co 5:9  Wherefore we labour, that, whether present or absent, we may be accepted of him.
2Co 5:10  For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad. [nobody is already judged].
2Co 5:11  Knowing therefore the terror of the Lord, we persuade men [to get prepared for judgment day by obeying 2 Cor 6:1 & 7:1]

Heb 9:27  … it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment

Sure, we know that after death, we have the promise of a building of God, an house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens [Heb 9/;15; 1Jn 2:25]~ IF we endure to the end and don’t depart from the faith [Matt 10:22], walk in the Spirit, deny the flesh [Mat 10:38], and bring forth good fruit [Mat 7:19]. Judgment day ahead will either confirm or negate whether we did or didn’t, one way or the other.[Jn 12:48; Act 17:31]

Many professing Christians are very “at home in the body”, that is, they live after the flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind, even as others [Eph 2:3] who don’t even profess to believe in Jesus. These deceived souls WILL be found naked and ashamed come judgment day. They fail to overcome by an acceptable faith. They are friends with the world and therefore enemies of God, while believing they are given liberty [because of the blood of Christ], to live however they please. They embrace Satan’s first lie – “Ye shall not surely die”[Gen 3:3-4] and “do what thou wilt” [Aliester Crowley], – in place of the true gospel, but believe the lie IS the gospel. This encourages them to believe they can watch violent, sexually explicit, blasphemous, evil TV and movies for entertainment, listen to music that glorifies sin, and to think it makes no difference which church they attend, or which pastor they hear or support, so long as they go along with the program peacefully, and attend church SOMEWHERE, ANY church, and tithe to somebody. They go to church, pay tithes, prepare church dinners, decorate Christmas trees, give gifts, and have church Easter egg hunts. They will say to Jesus, “Lord, Lord, did not we celebrate your birthday and your resurrection annually, build huge beautiful church buildings to teach millions of souls about what our seminary-taught preachers believed, didn’t we have revivals, didn’t we get slain in the spirit, bark, cluck, moo, or oink, didn’t we sprinkle babies, and baptize people according to the method of their choice; didn’t we elect Christian presidents, didn’t we warn people about JWs and Mormons (at least until a Mormon was a better choice than Obama, you know Lord, we HAD to vote the “lesser of two evils”!), didn’t we fight many wars for Christian politicians and religious leaders (umm, Lord, nobody’s perfect, at least Bush said he was TOLD there were WMDs in Iraq), didn’t we support our troops, praying for their victories…

When we are “at home in the body”, we are indeed absent from the Lord, for we should walk by faith, not by sight. But those who are at home in the body DO walk by sight. Jesus said he would be IN us:

Joh 14:15  If ye love me, keep my commandments.
Joh 14:16  And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever;
Joh 14:17  Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.
Joh 14:18  I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you.
Joh 14:19  Yet a little while, and the world seeth me no more; but ye see me: because I live, ye shall live also.
Joh 14:20  At that day ye shall know that I am in my Father, and ye in me, and I in you.
Joh 14:21  He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.
Joh 14:22  Judas saith unto him, not Iscariot, Lord, how is it that thou wilt manifest thyself unto us, and not unto the world?
Joh 14:23  Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him.
Joh 14:24  He that loveth me not keepeth not my sayings

Those who walk by sight don’t walk by faith; they seek an earthly kingdom instead of an heavenly one; they work to please men and the flesh; they receive praise and honor of men. Many support Zionism. These things disqualify people from being worthy of God’s kingdom.

1Jn 2:15  Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.
1Jn 2:16  For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.
1Jn 2:17  And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.

Jas 4:1  From whence come wars and fightings among you? [from FAITH?] come they not hence, even of your lusts that war in your members?
Jas 4:2  Ye lust, and have not: ye kill, and desire to have, and cannot obtain: ye fight and war, yet ye have not, because ye ask not.
Jas 4:3  Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts.
Jas 4:4  Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.

Loving this present evil world is spiritual adultery. Wars come not from God, but from lust and pride. Friends of these are not in Christ, and will pass away with those evils, for God’s love does not abide in them. They are indeed “absent from the Lord” as he is from them. When God neither lives in nor walks with someone, that person is absent from the Lord, because he’s at home walking in the flesh.

2Co 6:14  Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness? 2Co 6:15  And what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel? 2Co 6:16  And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. 2Co 6:17  Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you, 2Co 6:18  And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty.

Rom 8:5  For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit. Rom 8:6  For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. Rom 8:7  Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be. Rom 8:8  So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God.
Rom 8:9  But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.

Rom 8:10  And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness.
Rom 8:11  But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken [raise up] your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you.
Rom 8:12  Therefore, brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live after the flesh.
Rom 8:13  For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live.

So let’s not be at home in this body. Let’s be pilgrims and strangers here.

Let’s now consider 2Cor 5:4, comparing it with 1Cor 15:

2Co 5:4 For we that are in this tabernacle do groan, being burdened: not for that we would be unclothed [without a body], but clothed upon [made like Jesus is now], that mortality might be swallowed up of life.

Does this change of bodies take place the same day a Christian dies, or will we all sleep in the grave until the last trump /  judgment, when we’ll all stand before the judgment seat of Christ? Don’t many pastors teach that believers won’t be judged, and that we were “already judged” when Jesus died, because, they say “Jesus took our place on the cross” [which is not taught in scripture anywhere]?

1Co 15:50  Now this I say, brethren, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God; neither doth corruption inherit incorruption.
1Co 15:51  Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, [which CLEARLY shows that some WILL sleep!] but we shall all be changed,
1Co 15:52  In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, AT THE LAST TRUMP: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.
1Co 15:53  For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality.
1Co 15:54  So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, THEN shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory. (mortality will then be swallowed up by life).

So then, do we groan for the day we will be unclothed [our dying day], or for the day we’ll be clothed upon [the day we’ll be made immortal]?

2Co 5:4  For we that are in this tabernacle [the physical body] do groan, being burdened [with sickness, toil, fighting the devil, etc]: not for that we would be unclothed, but clothed upon, that mortality might be swallowed up of life.

We long to be made immortal and to live where Jesus went to prepare a place for us, not for an earthly kingdom, if we’ve been born again and abiding faithful to love God with all our heart, mind, strength and soul.

Joh 14:2  In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. Joh 14:3  And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.
Joh 14:4  And whither I go ye know, and the way ye know.

Joh_20:17  Jesus saith unto her, Touch me not; for I am not yet ascended to my Father

Act 1:9  And when he had spoken these things, while they beheld, he was taken up; and a cloud received him out of their sight. Act 1:10  And while they looked stedfastly toward heaven as he went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel;
Act 1:11  Which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven.

Jesus didn’t go secretly to prepare a place for us in earthly Jerusalem; he went to HEAVEN.

1Th 4:13  But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep [dead in Christ], that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope.
1Th 4:14  For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so [in the same way] them also which sleep in Jesus [in the grave] will God bring with him [up to heaven].
1Th 4:15  For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain [on earth] until the coming of the Lord shall not prevent [go (up to heaven) before] them which are asleep [in the grave].

1Th 4:16  For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the [last] trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first:
1Th 4:17  Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.

1Co 15:5  And he [Jesus] was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve:
1Co_15:6  After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep.

Some who witnessed Christ rise had died before Paul wrote 1Cor. They “sleep in Jesus” to this day.

Joh 6:39  And this is the Father’s will which hath sent me, that of all which he hath given me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up again at the last day.
Joh 6:40  And this is the will of him that sent me, that every one which seeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have everlasting life: and I will raise him up at the last day.
Joh 6:44  No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day.
Joh 6:54  Whoso eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, hath eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day.

In these verses in John 6, Jesus clearly says he will raise his followers up on the LAST DAY, (not 7 or 3 1/2 years before the last day). This then will be the day when believers are changed from mortal to immortal, not the same day they die, as many have been taught.

Joh 5:28  Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which ALL that are in the graves shall hear his voice,
Joh 5:29  And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation. [same day]

Dan_12:2  And many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt. [same day]

Not only will Jesus come on the last day, but he will raise EVERYONE who ever lived out of their grave then, and everyone will be judged THAT SAME DAY. SO THE LAST DAY IS ALL OF THESE: LAST TRUMP DAY, RESURRECTION DAY, AND JUDGMENT DAY.

Rev 20:11  And I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them. [2Pet 3]
Rev 20:12  And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works.
Rev 20:13  And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works.
Rev 20:14  And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.
Rev 20:15  And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.

So then nobody goes directly to heaven or hell the day they die. We will sleep in the grave until the last day, unless we’re still alive when Jesus comes in his glory with the angels.

Mat 16:27  For the Son of man shall come in the glory of his Father with his angels; and then he shall reward every man according to his works.
